Floating Car Data (FCD) are location- and relocation data, obtained with the help of for example the Global Positioning system (GPS). A vehicle that is equipped with GPS (navigation or smartphone), can be accurately followed in time and location.
With satellite positioning it is possible to obtain a large amount of vehicle data. By linking the time-space data to a digital road map, we can obtain road-bound traffic information. To periodically possess reliable traffic information, data are being obtained for a longer period and merged for similar periods of time and processes.
These historical data are suitable to give a prognosis of the travel time, but less suitable to give actual traffic information. Especially with deviant situations (incidents, bad weather, etc.), actual data are of importance.
